What is swing dancing?

Swing dancing originated in 1920s along with swing music. Swing dance comes in many forms and styles, the best known being Lindy Hop, which gained popularity during the great depression in Harlen (New York). After World War II, swing dancing spreaded across the United States and the rest of the world, spawning variations such as East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Bal-Swing, Blues...etc.

At Lindy on Sproul, we teach East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, and Charleston, and some variations.

What makes Lindy on Sproul unique?

At Lindy on Sproul, we encourage social dancing. In social dancing (as opposed to performance or competitve dancing), there's no fixed partnership, and dancers are encouraged to meet and dance with as many people as they can. We teach students to improvise to the music, be creative with their partner, and socialize. This is in contrast to learning a choreography, rehearsing, and performing.

Lindy on Sproul is a very relaxed enviroment. Our regulars will meet every week, rain or shine, (and even exams) to dance!

What is the time commitment?

Uh... NONE! just dance!
But if you do want a time commitment, go to our Get Involved page to see how you can help run the swing venues!
